Richard Westropp George was born 3 December 1880[1]. He was the eldest son of Barry George and Mary Westropp.
Sadly his mother Mary died on 27 April 1885 at age 31. His father Barry died the following year, on 11 March 1886 at about age 39.
Richard and his three siblings were put under the guardianship of their uncle, John Fox George of Mountshannon.
In the 1901 Ireland Census, Richard Westropp George (aged 20) was recorded in the household of cousin John Wakely (39) and Raley Sow Montserrat Wakely (38) and their three daughters at Ballyburly, King's County. He was an Undergraduate of Trinity College Dublin (T.C.D.).
He graduated Trinity College with a B.A. and went on to become a Civil Engineer.
The following marriage notice was published on page 15 of the Weekly Irish Times 20 June 1908:
He and Alice Maud Stoney were duly married[3].
They had at least six children.
In the 1911 Ireland Census, Richard Westropp George (aged 30 and a Civil Engineer BA BAT LCS) was recorded living with his wife Alice Maud George (29) and their two children Annie May George (1) and Cecil Barry Westropp George (under 1 month) at 6 Seafield Road, Clontarf East, Dublin. Also in the household was a Maternity Nurse and three servants.
Richard served in the 1st World War with the Royal Engineers.
During the 2nd World War, three of his sons served; sadly two of them were killed, including Ion Butler Westropp George who died on 13 July 1943, aged 27.
Richard was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.). He lived at Sessiagh Lodge, Dunfanaghy, County Donegal, Northern Ireland.
He passed away in 1958[4]. His funeral service was held in Ballymore Church on 5 March 1958. He was survived by his wife and three daughters; Ann Mary George who was a nursing sister in Tanganyike; Mrs. Winslow of Enniskillen, Mrs. Graham, wife of Rev. M. F. Graham, St. Luke's Parish Church, Belfast, and a son in Canada[5].
