Biography

Born in Edgware General Hospital on 3 Feb 1955.

First name(s) Peter D Last name Gaulton Birth quarter 1 Birth year 1955 Mother's maiden name Hall District Hendon County Middlesex Country England

Mother and Father were living in lodgings of Mr Lamonte in Mill Hill until their house was ready to move into around August 1955, at 33 Hillside, Harefield, Middlesex.

Schooled at Harefield Primary School until the age of 10 when, due to being unlikely to pass the eleven plus exam, transferred to Frays College, Uxbridge. This was an independent school which concentrated on the basic subjects, whilst not covering scientific subjects well, or practical ones at all.

Personal life.

Married Jenny in 1980 after meeting in 1978. First home purchased was 20B Queens Road, Uxbridge which had recently been converted to a ground floor maisonette from an Edwardian semi detached house. After two years a redundancy payment from Hoover enabled a move to a two bedroomed semi at 110 Burnham Avenue, Ickenham.

Tom and Joe were born whilst living at Burnham Avenue. The imminent arrival of Vicki necessitated the removal to a three bedroomed house at 23 Copthall Road East, Ickenham in April 1988.

Jenny was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. Despite treatment she died in 2000.

Met Sue in 2002 and married in 2009. Moved to 13 Cranbourne Avenue, Windsor at the same time.

Work.

At age sixteen was showing some practical ability so with parents encouragement applied for an apprenticeship at Aeronautical Quality Assurance Directorate in Harefield. After four years, finished with ONC in Mechanical Engineering. Spent next two years at EMI Electronics in Materials Laboratories whilst gaining HNC Engineering from Slough CHE.

Later worked at Hoover Ltd., Perivale (1978-1982) as Quality Technician, Viking Precision Engineers, Perivale (1982-83) as Quality Manager, AMP (GB) 1983-89 as Environmental Test Engineer and later Deputy Manager, Senior Design Engineer (1989-96) and Account Manager (1996-2002) responsible for Rover Group account among others. After the death of Jenny in 2000 full time working became difficult so resigned from AMP (then Tyco Electronics). Invested in a business which failed after a year, then worked in a hardware store for 3 years after which became a self employed handyman until 2020.

Hobbies.

Winemaking and brewing. Grapes grown on an allotment, mostly Regent. Wrote software "Home Wine Program" for formulating recipes for country wines and logging progress. Made it available as a free download for four years.

Astrophotography for three or so years in 1980's and again in 2010's. Mostly of the Moon and Jupiter. A hobby which cousin David Gaulton also had, in which he became very accomplished.

Growing fruits and vegetables on an allotment. Member of a cider making cooperative together with nine other plot holders.

During the mid 1970's frequently went to live music concerts, mostly Progressive, Psychedelic and Kraut rock.

Benign tumour on a saliva gland was operated on on four occasions between ages of 15 and 24, with eventual removal of the gland.

Appendix removed at age of 30.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia diagnosed around age of 30.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profiles Robert Prestley (abt.1689-), Roger Prestley (abt.1660-), and Jane Unknown (abt.1660-).

You cited baptism record, but we really need more information, sufficient for someone to follow in your footsteps and easily reproduce your efforts. Please elaborate. Where is this baptism record located? What information is in this record? Etc.

Thanks.

Hello, Peter!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi

It appears that Peter Gaulton and I are some distant collateral cousins. I would be interested to learn of the origin of the name of 'Gaulton' as I believe it has French/Norman connections. As does apparently the names of Kerly/Kerley/Spencer/Belben of my line and they all seem to marry each other in Hants and Dorset. I would be grateful for any comment or news of this.

Hi Peter,

I believe the surname Gaulton is a misspelling of Galton, which is the name of a hamlet in Dorset near Lulworth Cove. The place name existed at the time of the Doomsday Book and comes from the middle English Gaful ton which means rented farm (or enclosure). I've visited Galton and it comprises a farm, half a dozen cottages and a garden centre. My part of the family seem to have stayed in Dorset until the time when my grandfather was born in nearby Salisbury, Wiltshire in the late 19th century.

Good Morning Peter (on my birthday). Thanks for that information, have not yet worked out our cousin relationship yet but early days. Galton was also the name of a Norman manor on South coast of Dorset not certain whether its near Lulworth Cove - not being a 'local'. I am more familiar with Blandford area and 'the Tarrants' - Belben home ground and where I exhibited (The Great Dorset Steam Fair) my military RAF staff car and other classics for some 30 years until it became too much when I reached 80! Keeping very much 'close to home' now' my family trying to recover from 'Omicron' and hip operation (my wife Anthea) so not happy 'party goers' at the moment - but still functioning. I am located in Bromley Kent (Greater London) since 1950?60's. Visited Alverstoke (parents parish) with the Staff Car display of 75th Anni. of D-Day Stokes Bay.
