Orvin was born in 1839 to Truman Gates and Jane Stewart. Orvin enlisted in Company E of the 103rd OVI on 23 Aug 1862 as a Private. He was promoted to Corporal on 23 Dec 1862 and then promoted to Sergeant on 1 May 1864. He mustered out with the company on 12 Jun 1865. He married Isabel A. Minor on 2 Sep 1865 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He moved to Michigan and became a Farmer. He passed away in 1925.
