Dr. Ruth Deborah Gates was born on 28 Mar 1962 in Akrotiri, Cyprus. She is the child of John Amos Gates and Muriel (Peel) Gates. In addition to her career in research, she served as a mentor, public speaker, science communicator, and proponent for change and progress in the field of marine science. Her appearance in the Netflix documentary "Chasing Coral" was one of her several efforts of public outreach and engagement, working to raise awareness of coral bleaching and inspire the public to put a stop to the damage being done to coral reefs. She died on 25 Oct 2018 in Kailua, Hawaii.
