Obituary

"Death Of Mr. Arthur Gask" Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954) 28 June 1951: Page 8.
Death Of Mr. Arthur Gask
Starting to write as a hobby when he was a North terrace dentist, Mr. Arthur Gask, who died in an Adelaide private hospital on Monday at the age of 82, had a long and successful career as a writer of mystery stories. His detective hero, Gilbert Larose, became a well-known figure in crime fiction, and when he retired from his dental practice in 1933, Arthur Gask named a farming property he bought at Burra "Gilrose" after his hero.
For nearly 30 years Arthur Gask was a regular contributor to the list of the English publishing firm of Herbert Jenkins, whose interest in his first novel started this prolific storyteller on a succession of nearly 40 novels.
The late H. G. Wells was an admirer of his work and corresponded with him and Bertrand Russell, also an admiring reader, called to see Arthur Gask at his home at Walkerville when he was in Adelaide last year.
His first story, "The Secret of the Sandhills," was published in a paper-covered edition of 1,000 copies at his own expense, when he could not find a publisher.
The edition was sold out in Adelaide in three weeks. Then Herbert Jenkins bought the rights to the book and put Arthur Gask on the road to fame and fortune. Nearly 40 of his novels have been published in England, nine in the United States, and several in a number of European countries, including Czechoslovakia.
Among Arthur Gask's most successful novels are "The Lonely House," "The Shadows of Larose," "The House on the Island," "The Judgment of Larose," "The Hidden Door," "The Poisoned Goblet," "The Hang-man's Knot," and "The Master Spy," some of which were serialised in "The Advertiser."
He has left a widow, a daughter (Mrs. John Shearer) and four sons, Arthur (Adelaide), Roland Cecil (New York), Geoffrey (Monteith), and Gerald (Burra). [13]
