Brian Shalvey Garvey was born on 17th June 1915 in Woollahra, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of Arthur Garvey and Gladys Boyd. [1]

On 19th July 1942 Brian was commissioned into the Second Australian Imperial Force. He served as Assistant Adjutant of 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion during the Aitape-Wewak Campaign of early 1945 on New Guinea's northern coast. He was discharged on 14th November 1945. [2]
Whilst home in Australia in 1944, Brian married Joan Maher in Sydney, New South Wales. [3]
