Biography

George Seaborne Garland was born on 8 May 1865 in Colchester, Essex, England, the son of Emily (Seaborne) Garland and George Garland.^[1]

George signed on to the Duke of Buckingham as "Butcher's Mate" in 1885. He signed off at Brisbane, then went to work at Sydney and, in October 1886, went to Victoria. ^[2]

He married Charlotte Lear Jackson in 1913 in Victoria, Australia.^[3]

He probably married ADA REBECCA BIRD nee WALKER in Victoria, Australia in 1937 ^[4]

George died in 1943 in Prahran, Victoria, aged 78 years.^[5][6]

   TO THE EDITOR OF THE AGE.

   Sir, - In Saturday's issue, 16th March, "Enquirer (Bentleigh)" asks for information of the Duke of Buckingham, of Ducal line, under charter to the Queensland Government. Fetching out immigrants, I signed on the 4th October, 1885, at Gravesend, at 1/- a month, as butcher's mate, under Captain Waterman. ... We arrived at Brisbane on 27th December, and I signed off 7th May, 1886.

   Many of the emigrants tried to get away south, but if caught were imprisoned. I struck a Job in Sydney, and came on to Melbourne, 15th October, 1886, and have, except on three occasions, when I was home in London, always been in Melbourne. I generally send the Saturday edition of "The Age" to my brother and sister in London. I wish I had kept a diary, as I think I could write many interesting accounts of my 49 years in Australia. — Yours, &c., Oakleigh. G. S. GARLAND.
