Biography

Neil was born 29 Dec, 1886, as "Nellie,"^[1] He was baptized on 14 Oct, 1888, in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. His parents were Joseph J. Garess and Nellie Sanderson.^[2]

In 1900, as a woman, he attended West Chester State Normal School, in Chester, Pennsylvania.^[3] The last record of him at the school is during the 1903-1904 year.^[4] He did not join the alumni organization.

In 1910, he was working as a chemist in a drug store as a woman.^[5] In 1920, he still lived with his parents.^[6]

After 1920, no records are found for "Nellie Garess," but records for Neil Zola Garess begin to appear.

In 1926, a man named Neil Garess married Marie Primeau in Nebraska.^[7] By 1930, the couple lived in Rawlins, Carbon, Wyoming. He worked as a lab technician.^[8] In 1937, Neil Garess applied for a Social Security Number. He indicated his parents were Joseph Garess and Nellie Sanderson.^[9]

In 1939, Neil married Gloria Gardner. In 1940, the couple lived in Los Angeles. His occupation was listed as "medical doctor" working in a "medical chemical laboratory,"^[10] which potentially refers to the Harrower Laboratory and Clinic for endocrinology and "organotheraputic" research and development less than half an hour away from his home. In 1942, Neil Zola Garess registered for the World War II draft as an unemployed man living in Los Angeles; he gave his contact as Honor Driscoll of Los Angeles.^[11] In 1946, Neil Z Garess was registered to vote, living in Crescenta, California, with spouse Helen M Garess.^[12]

Neil Zola Garess passed away in 1958 in Crescenta Valley, California.^[1] His death certificate was altered to say that he was never married, although Helen was the informant the state of California relied on for the certificate.
