Alice was born in Dagenham, Essex to Joseph and Alice Gardner. She was baptised on April 9, 1820 in St. Peter and St. Paul Church, the parish church of Dagenham on the same day as her brother Joseph.[1]
She was married to Henry Jones in 1851, before the census of March 30.[2][3] The newly wed couple made their home on Half Moon Lane in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Henry was working as a groom.[4]
In 1861 Alice was working as a charwoman and living in Kents Yard in St. Albans. She is listed in the census as married, but also as the head of the household and there is no one else in the household. Her inlaws and her future husband (with his current wife) all live in the same area.[5] Possibly Henry had died before the 1861 census.
September 25, 1869 Alice married neighbour James Oakley in St. Albans.[6] In 1871 they were living in Kents Yard in St. Albans. Alice was working as a laundress and James was a house painter.[7]
Alice died in November of 1879. She was buried on November 11, 1879 in St. Albans.[8]
Research Notes
Alice and her brother Joseph were baptised on the same day. Were they twins? It seems likely as they were also each named after a parent.
