Birth

Maria de la Cruz Garcia aka Cruz Gurule was born in Cañoncito, New Mexico on May 3, 1865, the daughter of Maria Juana Garcia and an unknown father.[1]

In 1880, Cruz (16) was living in Santa Fe, New Mexico with her adoptive mother, Maria de la Luz Gurule, and (adoptive?) brother, Octaviano Gurule (9).[2]

Marriage

On July 13, 1881, Cruz married Jesus Gonzales, at Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles Catholic Mission Church in Pecos, New Mexico.[3][4]

Death

Cruzita passed away peacefully at home in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 105. She was buried in the family plot in Cañoncito Cemetery.[21][22]

Research Notes

  • Cruz (my great-great grandmother) sometimes went by Gurule, sometimes by Garcia. Reasons aren't entirely clear. Its possible that the Gurule name came from a stepfather, adoptive father, or biological father (she was listed as the illegitimate child of Juanita Garcia on her baptismal record). According to my family, she either never knew, or never said, who her father was.

    • Cruz appears on the 1880 census, at age of 16, as the adopted child of Maria de la Luz Gurule. Octaviano Gurule is also listed as an adopted child (possibly her biological brother?). Whittington-2355 02:44, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
