Biography

Cyril Garbett G.C.V.O. is Notable.

Rev Charles Forster Garbett (1875-1955) was the son of Rev Charles Garbett, the vicar of Tongham and his 2nd wife Susan Charlotte née Forster.

He was ordained in 1899 as a deacon and became successively the Bishop of Southwark, the Bishop of Winchester and the Archbishop of York from 1942 to 1955

He baptised Princess Anne, the second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on 21 October 1950 in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace.

On his eightieth birthday, 6 February 1955, he retired from active ministry and was created a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

On his retirement, Garbett was offered and accepted a hereditary barony, but he died before this could be legally created. It is thought he was to take the title Baron Garbett of Tongham.

Later that year, he underwent surgery and spent the last months of his life in a convalescent home where he continued to write and correspond until his death, on 31 December 1955.
