Biography

Joseph Henry "Joe" Garagiola was born circa February 12, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Angeline Garavaglia and Giovanni "John" Garagiola, immigrants from Italy.

In 1930, Joe lived with his parents, his older brother, Mickey, and his uncle, Thomas Garavaglia, on Elizabeth Avenue, in Block 5858 of Ward 24, in St. Louis. His father and uncle supported the family as a laborers in the brick industry.

In 1940, the Garagiolas still lived on Elizabeth Avenue, which was then in Block 20 of Ward 24. Joe's father was still a laborer for a brick yard, while Mickey was a waiter at a restaurant and Thomas was a bartender at a tavern.

On April 24, 1944, at Jefferson Barracks in Lemay, Missouri, Joe enlisted in the United States military. He was assigned to the Army as a private. His civilian occupation was listed as "Athletes, sports instructors, and sports officials." Joe remained in the military until May 13, 1946.
