Gilbert White Ganong was born on May 22, 1851 in Springfield, in the Colony of New Brunswick.
At the time of the 1851 Canada Census, Francis, Deborah, James H., Edwin, Matilda, Mary, and Gilbert W. Ganong were listed as living in Springfield, New Brunswick[1].
In 1873, Gilbert Ganong co-founded Ganong Bros. Limited with his brother James.
In 1876 he married Maria Famicha Robinson. They had no children.[2]
In 1888 Gilbert White Ganong invented and patented a process for printing the company name on the bottom of chocolates using embossed celluloid pads.
In 1896, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons for the riding of Charlotte. A Liberal-Conservative, he was re-elected in 1900 and 1904, but was defeated in 1908.
On June 29, 1917, he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick and served until his death in October.
Gilbert died in St. Stephen on October 31, 1917[3], and was buried in the St Stephen Rural Cemetery[4].
