George Gannett Falls Lifeless
Insurance Man and Real Estate Dealer Drops Dead in Eastwood Street
Born at Lafayette in 1837
Grandson of Revolutionary Soldier and member of Pioneer Onondaga Family - Prominent in Many Activities
Funeral services for George Orrin Gannett, 79, insurance agent and real estate dealer, who dropped dead at 10:30 0'clock yesterday morning on Gannett drive, Eastwood, will be conducted at his home, No. 104 Concord place at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. Rev. Dr. Philip Cole of Rome, assisted by Rev. U. G. Warren will officiate.
Mr. Gannett was stricken while looking over some property on the tract of land that was named for him. Coroner Crane, after an investigation, decided death was due to heart disease. Mr. Gannett was apparently in his usual health until the time he was stricken.
He was born at Lafayette, January 20, 1837, and received his early education at the Onondaga Academy. His grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and his father was one of the pioneers of Onondaga county and probably owner of more property here than any man of his time.
In Milk Business
When his father died Mr. Gannett conducted a large dairy farm in Dewitt, and had a large milk route in this city for thirty years. He was superintendent of the old Onondaga County Milk Association. About twenty years ago he organized the G. O. Gannett Fire Insurance Agency, and at the same time became engaged in the real estate business.
He moved into the city about 26 years ago. He often told of how he watched the city grow from a small village to a large city. For many years he was president of the Grange Store in West Genessee street and had a wide acquaintance among the farmers of Central New York.
Mr. Gannett was a member of the consistory of the First Reformed Church in James street for many years. He was a faithful communicant, always being interested in the affairs of the church, and seldom missed a Sunday service. When he resigned from the board last year he said he felt he had earned a rest.
Always a Democrat
In politics he was always a Democrat. At one time he was road commissioner of the town of Dewitt and held other public offices.
Mr. Gannett was married twice. His first wife Mrs. Anganette Griffin Gannett, died September 8, 1893. Four children were born to the couple. They are Dr. G. J. Gannett of this city, Mrs. Willard C. Dubois of the city, Miss Agnes Gannett of Stapleton, Staten Island, and Miss Anna Gannett of Boston, Mass.
His second marriage was to Miss Sina Garfield, who also survives, with two brothers, Louis Gannett of Gannett, Ia., and Willard Gannett of Travers City, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. William Bailey of Cardiff and Mrs. Jane Button of the city.[2]
