Isabel Gammie was christened on 15 Dec 1799 at Drumblade, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and was the daughter of William Gammie and Isabel Troup.[1]
She married William Fordyce on 17 Oct 1819 at Drumblade, Aberdeen, [2] in what must have been a hurried wedding since their first born son, William was christened just three months later on 25 Jan 1820 at Drumblade, Aberdeen.[3]
Kirkyard of Marnoch, Banffshire
The following year on 23 Sep Isobel's father, William Gammie (abt.1744-abt.1821) died and was buried at Kirkyard of Marnoch, Banffshire,[4] Isobel's uncles William and John and aunt Helen had all been buried here at the ancestral family home town of Marnoch, and their names were etched into the same stone.
Isabel's second son George, was born 1 Mar 1822 and christened just five days after at Drumblade.[5] Nearly two years later William and Isobel welcomed their first born daughter Isobel,[6][7] on 29 Jan 1824, she was christened on 5 Feb 1824, Drumblade.[8] A second daughter Helen soon joined the growing family on 5 May 1826, and christened on 11 May, also in Drumblade.[9]
On 11 Jul 1827 Isobel's mother died and was buried along side Isobel's father at Kirkyard of Marnoch.[4] In 1854 Isobel junior's uncle Peter and his second wife Elspet would add their names to the stone.[4]
The couple's third daughter, Elspet, was born on 1 Feb 1828, and christened on 8 Feb.[10] A fourth daughter, Elizabeth,[6] was born 17 Sep 1832, christened 3 Oct.[11] On 11 Feb 1835 the couple's fifth daughter, Jean[6][7] entered this world , and was christened on 26 Feb.[12]Almost two years later Isobel and William were blessed with a sixth daughter, Ann,[6][7] on 30 Jan 1837, who was christened on 12 Feb.[13] All the daughters were christened at Drumblade, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Isabel and William seemed to have remained in Isabel's hometown until sometime between 1837 and 1841 because when the 1841 census was taken the family were living at Comisty, Forgue, Aberdeenshire.[6] Over the years, the older children moved out of the family home that by this time only 4 daughters remained in the house: Isobel (17), Elizabeth (9), Jane (6), and Ann (4). William's occupation is listed as smith.
Last born child, Peter was born on 13 Feb 1842, [7] and christened that same year on March 1st at Forgue.[14]
William and Isobel's daughters married a few years later; Helen Fordyce married Alexander Duff on 10 Nov 1849 at Gamrie, Banff, Scotland,[15] and Isabella married William Reid on 19 Jan 1850 in Banffshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[16]
When the 1851 census was taken Isobella Fordyce (now 51) was still living at Comisty, Strathbogie, Aberdeenshire with husband William Fordyce (54), who was now a blacksmith and farmer of 5 acres, and some of their children: Jean Fordyce (16), Ann Fordyce (14), Peter Fordyce (9), Isobella Reid (26),[7] and grand daughters Isobella Reid (0) and Ann Watson (5). [17]Their daughter Helen was living with her husband Alexander and their young son, Alexander junior at High Street, Gamrie, Banff. [18]Helen died aged 33 in 1859. [19]
Isabella Fordyce (Gammie)'s death was registered at Inverkeithny in 1869, she was 73. [22]
It's possible that Isobel is buried at St Clement's Churchyard, Aberdeen, Aberdeen City, Scotland. [23] The memorial states that she died on 2 Feb 1868, I requested a photo of the headstone and received a message from Pam Swanson "I have the MI book for St Clement’s and Isabella’s name doesn’t appear in it. This means that unfortunately there is no stone for her."
