The Gambrells were Huguenots who suffered in France in the days of Louis XIV, and came to America towards the close of the 17th century, by way of Holland and Ireland. I was told years ago that there is no evidence at all that the John Gambrells I, II and III ever had the middle name Newton. I was told that is something someone added in later and it has just got perpetuated. It's not in any of their documents or on any of their gravestones. If someone can actually document it, that's another matter .
