Queta Gambie/Steley[2]

Queta was born in 1914, the 4th child of William and Quetta Gambie. She attended the Howard State School

about a block away from where she lived at 34 James Street in Howard.

At the age of 19 she married Harold Steley (Tiny) and the early part of their life can be seen under Tiny Steley-6.

After Tiny passed away she went to work as a barmaid at the Royal Hotel in Howard for the owner and her close friend, Doreen Lea, having her youngest two children still at school.

She lived the remainder of her life, after her youngest children moved to Brisbane in 1969, mostly on her own (except for the company of her dogs, firstly Lassie and later Misti), on the property outside of Howard, often travelling by train to visit her children at the various places where they lived including North/Central Queensland (Bruce) , Apple Tree Creek (Jane), Brisbane (Stephan, Gaynor & Dennis) and Sydney (Bob), usually for 3-5 weeks at a time. When she travelled she would usually leave her dog at the local kennels (Pattersons) in Phillip St.

She was fond of gardening and planted a multitude of trees and flowers which she had to water with Tank Water by hand as there was no connected town water. She also fed the local wildlife including Kookaburras, Butcher Birds, Rainbow Lorikeets (blueys), Scaly-breasted Lorikeets (greenies) etc.

She passed away in 1980 at the age of 66.
