Biography

Acasio Gallegos was a New Mexican.
Acasio was a lawyer.
Acasio was a teacher at the Lincoln Public School in Lincoln, NM.

Acacio Gallegos was born in New Mexico in about 1869.

He married Lavinia Brill in about 1890. The couple had one child, Acasio Eduardo,[1] before her death in 1891:
On [31 July 1891] in Los Alamos, the wife of Don Acacio Gallegos, brother of Rafael Gallegos, died of fever. She leaves a son and her husband to mourn her death.[2]

From about 1891-1893, Acacio owned land near Las Vegas, New Mexico.[3][4]

In December 1892, the Lincoln Public School opened, with Acasio as teacher.[5]

In 1893, he married Ramona Torres. They had one daughter, Ramoncita.

In January of 1896, while on vacation in Tularosa with his family, Acasio's home in Lincoln burned down and all of his possessions were lost.[6]

In October of 1896, he began teaching at the Analla School in Lincoln County.[7]

He served as Deputy Sheriff of Union County in 1896[8][9] and of Clayton County in 1897.[10]

By 1900, Acasio's second wife had passed and he (30) and his son, Acasio Eduardo (8), were living in Lincoln, New Mexico with his sister, Anita.[11] He was working as a teacher.

On 25 Dec 1901, Acasio married his third wife, Cora Grumbles in Lincoln, New Mexico. They had several children before her death in 1921.

On April 17, 1908, the couple lost two of their young daughters to scarlet fever in the same night. Emilia, age 15, and Corita, age 3 1/2, were described as "bright children, speaking well both the English and Spanish languages."[12]

In 1910, Acasio (40) & Cora were living in Santa Fe, New Mexico and he was employed as a clerk.[13]

From about 1909 to 1912, Acasio served as New Mexico's Assistant Superintendent of Education.[14][15][16][17][18]

In 1919, he was employed as a district court interpreter.[19]

By 1920, the family had moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico.[20]

In 1926, Acasio, now a lawyer, suffered serious injuries when he was assaulted by a group of men in Old Town Albuquerque. The attack was retaliation resulting from the case of the State of New Mexico vs George Gregg, in which Acasio had prosecuted Gregg for his alleged role in a robbery.[21]

In 1930, Acasio was still living in Albuquerque, New Mexico and working as a Field Agent for the District Attorney's office. His wife Cora had died and, in addition to their children, his household now included a servant by the name of Christobella (Chavez) Gallegos.[22]

Some time after 1930 he married Cristobela Chavez. The couple had two daughters, Iola Dolores & Amanda "Mannie" Magdalena.

Acacio passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico 1937.[23][24][25] He was buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Albuquerque.[26]

Research Notes

  • Family Search record index for 1900 census appears to list Acasio in the household of George Sena, however an annotation in the page's household column indicates that lines 26 & 27 (Acacio & Acacio E Gallegos) are membetrs of household no. 33 (household of Anita Gallegos) from the previous sheet.
  • The 1930 census lists Cristobela (Chavez) "Sullivan" in Acasio's household as a servant before they were married. The Sullivan is crossed out indicating that her last name was Gallegos at this time. This makes sense because her married name at the time was also Gallegos (she was divorced from first husband, Felipe Gallegos).
