Charles was born 16 July 1883 in Canterbury New Zealand. He was the son of Frederick James Gaitt [1839 - 1910] and Donaldina McKenzie [1840-1904] Note Death records gave date of birth. [Charles was a son of William Gaitt & Elizabeth Lowthorpe [NZBDM has parents listed as Donaldina and Frederick ???]]

Charles was a telegraph linesman living in Taumarunui when he enlisted in WWI as Sapper (later Corporal) with the Engineers Unit, His Service Number was WWI 4/1045. He was in the 6th reinforcement draft. His Unit was the Divisional Signallers. He was in the Canterbury Military District. He was single and named Nurse Gaitt [his sister] living at Taurangi St Ashburton as his next of kin. [2]
Charles trained in Canterbury and then sailed from Wellington 14 August 1915 on either the Vessel Willochra or Tofua.
After the war Charles married Minnie Clara [Drawbridge] Rees 7 July 1922.in Nelson New Zealand [3]
The couple had no children, but Minnie had two sons from her first marriage to Charles Gilbert Rees.
Charles passed away 9 October 1954 in Palmerston North New Zealand. [4]
