Biography

Jane (Furze) Chapple was born in Hampshire, England.

Jane was born on 14 March 1810 and baptised on 4 January 1817 at Binsted, Hampshire, England the daughter of John and Mary Furze.[1][2]

On 16 February 1828 Jane married Charles Chapple at Binsted[3] Jane and Charles had the following children, all born in Binsted:

  1. William was born in 1828.
  2. Harriet was born in 1833.
  3. Charles was born between Oct–Dec 1839.[4]
  4. Eliza was born in 1842.[5]
  5. Andrew was born in 1844.[6]
  6. George was born in 1846.[7]
  7. Harry was born in 1850.[8]

At the 1841 census Jane, aged about 30, was living with her husband Charles Chapple, an Agricultural Labourer, at South Hay near Binsted. With them were their children William (12), James (10), Harriett (9), Ann (6), Samuel (4) and Charles (1).[9]

In 1851 Jane, 44, was still living at Binsted with her husband Charles (48), an Agricultural Labourer, and children William (23), an Agricultural Labourer, Harriet (18), Charles (11), Eliza (9), Andrew (7), George (5) and Harry (1).[10]

In 1861 Jane (53) was living at Blacknest near Binsted with her husband Charles (57) and sons Andrew (18) and Harry (11), all Agricultural Labourers. Next door was George Chappell (60), a Farmer who was a brother of Charles, and his wife Elizabeth (40).[11]

Jane's death was registered during January -March 1868 at Alton, Hampshire.[12]

Research Notes

Criminal Case - Larceny

There is a criminal case that mentions a trial for larceny relating to a Jane Chappell on 3 Jan 1848 in Hampshire resulting in a sentence of 3 weeks jail.[13] Also at Ancestry.com messaging from an Ancestry.com researcher to John Mayes advises that "... the Newspapers section on FindMyPast, the Hampshire Telegraph of 8 Jan 1848 carried the usual report of court cases, and mentions that Jane Chappell, Susan Pink and Eliza Lucas were all sentenced to three weeks hard labour for stealing three bundles of wood!"

Death

Jane's death was registered during Jan-Mar 1868 at Alton, Hampshire. She would, therefore, have died before 1 Apr 1898. Jane spent her whole life at Binsted, and as Alton was the nearest registration centre, she likely died at Binsted.[12]
