Biography

Millard Dean Fuller was born on 3 Jan 1935 in Lanett, Chambers, Alabama to parents Render Alexander Fuller and Frances Estin Cook. He married Linda Caldwell in 1979. They had four children. He died on 3 Feb 2009 in Americus, Sumter, Georgia.

"Founder of Habitat for Humanity in 1976 in Americus, Georgia. Served as the organization's leader and president for 29 years. Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Millard, and his wife, Linda, started it after pioneering a low-cost housing program in rural southwest Georgia from 1968 to 1972 with Clarence Jordan of Koinonia Farms, and then undertaking three years of similar work from 1973 to 1976 in Zaire, Africa. Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide housing ministry. 1957: Graduated from Auburn University in Alabama. 1959: Married Linda Caldwell. 1960: Received law degree from University of Alabama and passed Alabama bar (in 1972, he passed the Georgia bar). Served briefly in the Army. 1960: Co-founder of Fuller and Dees Marketing Group Inc. in Montgomery, Ala. 1960-65: Partner in Fuller and Dees law firm in Montgomery. 1966-68: Development director of Tougaloo College in Mississippi. 1968-72: Director of Koinonia Partners Inc. Developed business operations for Koinonia Christian community in Americus, Ga. 1973-76: Became Church of Christ's director of development in Zaire. Initiated housing project for low-income families in Mbandaka, Zaire. 1976-2005: Founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International. 1996: Awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. 2005: Founder and president of Fuller Center for Housing."

"Fuller, 74, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Clinton in 1996, died Tuesday. He was the creator of Habitat for Homes. Habitat builds homes for low-income families. The homes are built with donated materials and labor, but also the "sweat equity," as Fuller called it, of the families who live in those homes. They also don't get them for free. They have to pay for them on no-interest loans. It was a novel idea in 1976, and it's still a novel idea, one with successful results — more than 1 million people living in more than 300,000 homes in more than 100 countries. Fuller's life is a wonderful example of a man with a great idea who was guided by a magnanimous heart. Mr. Fuller went to Auburn University, running unsuccessfully for student body president, and in 1956 was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He graduated from Auburn with a degree in economics in 1957 and entered the University of Alabama School of Law. He died early Tuesday morning near his south Georgia home after suffering from chest pains, headache and difficulty swallowing, his wife said. Besides his brother, Doyle, of Montgomery, Ala., and his wife, Mr. Fuller is survived by their son, Christopher, of Macon, Ga.; their daughters, Kim Isakson of Argyle, Tex., Faith Umstattd of Americus, and Georgia Luedi of Jacksonville, Fla.; and nine grandchildren. A visitation was planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Americus, and burial was planned for 11 a.m. today at Koinonia Farm. A memorial service was planned for later in the month."
