Biography

Charles Edward Fuller was born on 25 April 1887 in Los Angeles, California.[1] His parents were Henry Fuller and Helen Day,[2][3] devout Methodists who ran a successful orange grove business.[4]

Charles graduated from Pomona College in 1910, and married his high school sweetheart, Grace Payton that same year.[4][5] They had one child, Daniel Payton Fuller, born 28 August 1925 in Los Angeles, California.[6][7][8][9]

Charles had little interest in religion until 1916, when he was converted by the preaching of Paul Rader, pastor of Moody Church in Chicago. After his conversion, he taught Sunday School at Placentia Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, and attended the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. In 1925, his fundamentalist views forced him and many others from his Sunday School class to split from Placentia Presbyterian, and form Calvary Church. Charles was ordained as a Baptist minister and pastored the new church. He also held revival meetings and began broadcasting religious radio programming. In 1933, he resigned his pastorate to form the Gospel Broadcasting Association to support his radio evangelism.[4]

From 1937 to 1968, Charles hosted a weekly Sunday broadcast for which he is most famous, The Old Fashioned Revival Hour, at its height, it had more than ten million listeners worldwide. He is also well known as the namesake of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, which he helped found in 1947.[4]

Charles passed away on 19 March 1968 in Los Angeles, California, shortly after his final broadcast of The Old Fashioned Revival Hour.[10][11]
