Holland entered service at 28 as a Sergeant in Company C, 7th Regiment, Ohio Infantry on 29 Jun 1861 for 3 years. Appointed Sergeant 1 Nov 1862; wounded at the battle of Port Republic, Virginia 9 Jun 1862; mustered out with company 6 Jul 1864.^[2][3]

Holland married twice.^[4] His first wife is unknown. He married Emily A. Warriner on 21 Aug 1876 in Geauga, Ohio, United States^[5]

He passed away on 19 Dec 1923 in Los Angeles County, California, United States^[6][7] and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.^[8]
