Extract from "Senior Citizen's News - August, 1977
A Vice-Chairman of the South Australian Council of the Ageing, Lt. Col. H. G. Frith, who died on 29th June, gave inestimable service to the community of South Australia as Director of the Meals on Wheels organisation for the past 9 years. He had been a member of the executive of S.A.C.O.T.A. since 1969.
Through his untiring and dedicated efforts, and his far-sightedpolicies, a vast network of delivery services make available nutritious meals daily for thousands of people in metropolitan and country areas.
After six years as deputy organiser, Lt. Col. Frith in 1968 succeeded Miss Doris Taylor as Director of Meals on Wheels. He was an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institue of Management. He had served in the army for 25 years, and was awarded the M.B.E. in 1950 for military services.
Lt. Col. Frith's main projects for Meals on Wheels were the innovation of hospital cooked meals being supplied in metropolitan and county areas. This service was arranged in conjunction with Hospitals Department and the Social Security Department with voluntary workers delivering the meals. Through this sheme it was possible to have nutritious meals supplied without the necessity of building kitchens in all areas for meal preparation.
In the early 1970's the introduction of a delivery service of frozen meals made a further expansion of Meals on Wheels services. One Week's supply of meals could be made in one delivery. In certain cases, where a daily personal contact is not required, this innovative scheme has proved to be most successful. There are now 66 branches of the Meals on Wheels organisation throughout the state of South Australia.
Lt. Col. Frith, who served his country with distiction in the war and peace, will be long remembered for his great kindness and gengleness, and for his caring and consideration of others.
