John McIntyre Frew was born on 1st August 1916 in Balmain, New South Wales, Australia. He was the eldest son of Archibald Frew and Mary Noble. [1] The family shortly after moved to Leichhardt, New South Wales.
On 28th March 1940 he enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force. His next-of-kin was listed as Archibald Frew, assumedly either his father or next younger brother. [2] Allocated to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion, John commanded 12th Platoon, B Company at the beginning of the Kokoda campaign in September 1942. He was wounded at Eora Creek in October 1942, shot through both feet. [3] He was discharged on 6th June 1943. [2] In July 1943 John was recommended by the Governor General for a Mention in Despatches (equivalent to today's Commendation for Gallantry) for 'gallant and distinguished services in the South West Pacific Area' and it was awarded in December that year. [4][5] Following the war, he was awarded the campaign and service medals, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
John married Norma Ball nee Hetherington in 1964 in Burwood, New South Wales. [6]; died 2 Jul 2010 Tahmoor, New South Wales [7] In 1968 John and Norma were living in Umina, in the electorate of Robertson, New South Wales, which is based on Gosford, on the Central Coast.
