Edward was born in England in 1842 to Thomas and Catherine French. Edward immigrated with his parents in 1850 and settled in Lorain County, Ohio. Edward enlisted in Company H of the 103rd OVI on 8 Aug 1862. He mustered out on 6 Dec 1862 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. He re-enlisted with Company K of the 135th Infantry on 2 May 1864. He mustered out with the company on 1 Sep 1864. He married Leonora Leonard on 18 Oct 1864. In 1870 his occupation is listed as a Jeweler in the U.S. Census. According to his Death Notice, Edward and his father Thomas, owned a jewelry business called "French and Son" in Elyria. After his father retired, Edward carried on the business with a partner, E.E. Fisher. Edward later sold his part of the business and owned a Furniture business in Cleveland until his retirement. Leonora passed away in 1909, Edward married Mrs. Minnie Dailey in 1911. He passed away in 1915 and at the time of his passing he was the Secretary of the 103rd OVI.
