Biography

Johan "John" Frei was born on 12 May 1874 in Clay Center Township, Clay Center, Kansas, United States. He was the son of Jacob Frei and Mary Brugger.[1][2][3][4][5] He attended school in Kansas through the 4th grade.[6] He and his family moved to Latah County, Idaho by the mid to late 1890s.[7]

In 1907, John, acquired 160 acres in Clearwater county, Idaho and in 1912 he bought another 160 acres in Ferry County, Washington, United States, both under the provisions of the Land Act of 24 April 1820.[8][9][10] Unlike the rest of his family, he doesn't seem to have applied for a homestead under the Act of 1862.

On 14 April 1909, he married Theresa "Tressie" Hartinger.[11][12][13][14] He was a resident of Collins, Latah, Idaho,[15][16] but after marriage, they moved to Bonner's Ferry, Boundary, Idaho and were living there in 1910.[17] In 1913, they were living in Oakesdale, Whitman, Washington[18] and in 1914 they lived in his wife's hometown of Leland, Nez Perce, Idaho[19] and later that year they were residing in Elk River, Clearwater, Idaho.[20] By 1915, they settled down for a bit. They were living in Spokane, Spokane, Washington where he was a motor truck driver for A. L. Newton Lumber Company.[21] They lived at N 912 Chestnut Street until about 1919[22][23][24][25][26] when they divorced. They had no children and in March of 1920, she married another divorced Spokanite in Montana.[27] John never remarried.

John was described as being of medium height, with gray eyes and black hair.[21]

John returned to Idaho and by 1925 he was the Fire Warden for the Timber Association, a job he filled for the next fifteen years up until just months before his death.[7] He was living in Bovill, Latah, Idaho when he was hospitalized in Moscow, Latah, Idaho early December 1940 and he passed away at the hospital 7 days later on 14 December.[7] He was buried on 17 December in the Old Section Block 1 of Moscow Cemetery.[28] Arrangements were made by Short's Funeral Home.[7]
