Biography

When John Thomas "Tom" Frazier was born in January 1849 in Montgomery, North Carolina, his father, John, was 31 and his mother, Mary, was 24. He had five younger half sisters by his father's second wife, Druesilla Wade Fraser.

Tom's mother Mary passed away in March 1860 at the age of 35. Tom was about 11 years old at the time of her death.

Eliza Jane was born in 1862 in Montgomery, North Carolina, when Tom was 13 years old. Sallie was born in 1864 when he was 15 years old. Tom was 18 years old when Martha was born in 1867. Florence was born in 1869 when he was 20 years old and Tempy was born in 1875 when he was 26 years old.

He married Susan Clementine Dunn in 1877 in his hometown. They had five children in 11 years. Their daughter Dora Lee was born on July 25, 1875, in Montgomery, North Carolina, the same year his youngest sister, Tempy was born.

His son William Thomas was born on April 10, 1879, and his son, John Colin, was born on April 23, 1880 both in Montgomery, North Carolina. A daughter Carrie Mae was born on June 1, 1884, in Montgomery, North Carolina. Their son James Dunn (Jim) was born on September 10, 1886, in Richmond, North Carolina.

John Thomas Frazier lived in Dovesville, South Carolina, in 1920.

He died on May 13, 1927, in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, South Carolina, at the age of 78.

Family Records indicate that he was born in January 1849. They also indicate that he is buried in the Frazier section Salem Church Cemetery in Bennettsville,SC.

Notes

In 1870, John Thomas Frazier may have witnessed political discrimination while living in Mount Gilead, North Carolina after ratification of the 15th Amendment.

The 15th Amendment to the Constitution granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."

In 1920 when John Thomas Frazier was living in South Carolina, cotton was king and textile factories transformed the rural state into a commercial hub.
