Biography

James Frater was born in Kirknewton, Northumberland, England in about 1826.^[1] His parents were John FRATER, Shepherd and Isabella (HARVIE) FRATER).^[2]

James FRATER married firstly Agnes TAIT^[3] and they had at least four children between 1855 and 1862, all born in Yetholm.

DEATH of FIRST WIFE:^[5] Agnes FRATER, married to James FRATER, skinner, died 9 January 1865, in Kiirk of Yetholm, aged 37 years, of “Probably Pericarditis, suddenly” (as certified by John THORNSON C.R.C.P.F. S.Edb., of Yetholm). Widower James FRATER was the informant. Agnes’ parents were Jacob TAIT, Hawker or Labourer, and Rachel (DOUGLS) TAIT.

James married secondly Christina (BOA) HILSON, widow of James HILSON.^[6][7]

DEATH of second wife - Christina FRATER, wife of James FRATER, skinner, died 6 March 1895, at Kirk of Yetholm, at age 60, of Cancer of the uterus (6 months) as certified by T. Hamilton HODGES L.A.C.P.E. & L.F.P.J.G.. Her parents were James BOA, ploughman (deceased) & Margaret (FOX) BOA (deceased). Death registered by James FRATER, widower.^[10]

James died just 2 years later. James FRATER, pauper, Widower of Christian BOA and previously of Agnes TAIT, died on 6 March 1897, in Kirk Yetholm, aged 71 years. The cause of death was Acute Lobar Pneumonia, 3 days, as certified by Alex RODGER M.B.C.M.. Son John FRATER registered his death..^[11]
