Biography

Fred Franklin, born in 1921, was the son of Frederic C. and Else Franklin.^[1] His mother was Jewish. When Hitler came to power, he was sent to boarding school in England at the age of 16.^[2] After the war, he emigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Toronto, where he worked as a mechanical engineer at A.V. Roe on the Avro Arrow project.

He married scientist Ursula Martius in May 1952. They had two children, Monica and Martin.

In the 1960s he developed and built sound boxes for schools that used the Orff method of teaching music to children.^[3]

He was an active volunteer with the Quakers, a human rights activist, a talented amateur musician and an avid orchid grower.^[4]

Fred died on August 6, 2016, and was buried in the Religious Society of Friends Burial Ground, Newmarket, Ontario^[5].
