Biography

Notables Project
Samuel Fox is Notable.

Philanthropist and founder of the Nottingham Building Society and a school for adult education

Samuel was born in 1781. He was baptised on 24 Nov 1781, son of William and Mary Fox.[1] [2]

Samuel married Sarah Jowitt on 9 August 1810 in Nottingham, England.[3] [4] Unfortunately Sarah died relatively young in 1827 and the marriage produced no children.

Samuel was a grocer, continuing the business of his father. He also founded the Nottingham Building Society in 1846 and was it's chairman for many years. He was known for running his businesses along strict principles of fairness for example expecting even the most important of customers to wait their turn in the queue at his grocer's shop.

He was a great philanthropist who was well known for his good works in the Nottingham area e.g. providing burials for cholera victims and food for the starving. He was a secretary of the Nottingham anti-slavery society. He also founded the first 'adult school' with methodist William Singleton. At the school adult students were able to learn bible studies, reading and writing. Staff from Fox's business were expected to teach at the school, which initially served women employees of local factories but then expanded to include men.

In the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses Samuel was recorded living at Hounds Gate, Nottingham. His occupation was recorded as grocer in the first 2 records and as retired grocer in the latter. He was living with a housekeeper and other domestic servants. [5] [6] [7]

He passed away in 1868. [8] [9]

Research notes

The current version of the wikipedia entry for Samuel appears to contain incorrect information about a second marriage. Sarah Jowitt (nee Storer) was Samuel's mother in law, not a second wife Parker-41651 20:08, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
