Andrew Hull Foote was born in New Haven, Connecticut on September 26, 1806. He was the second of six known children born to Samuel Foot and Eudocia Hull, all of whom were males. Note: His birth record would show his last name spelled as "Foot", but at some point in his career, he added a final e to the spelling, as did many of his cousins prior to the Civil War.
He finished his secondary education at the Episcopal Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut, in the same class as Gideon Wells who went on to become the Secretary of the Navy, "and went immediately to sea under old Admiral Gregory" as acting midshipman. [1]
His early career took him to the Mediterranean as Log Lieutenant of the Mediterranean Squadron in 1833, and as First Lieutenant of the war sloop of war "John Adams" which circumnavigated the globe in 1838. This included "participating in the attack on the pirates of Sumatra". [2]
