Biography

Harriet Amelia Folsom was born August 23. 1838 to William Folsom and Zerviah Clark in Buffalo, New York.[1]

She married Brigham Young

Shortly before President Young's death, he decided to erect an official residence where he could entertain people who came to see him. The family understood that Amelia would live there and was happy that he had chosen her to assume the responsibilities of all social affairs. Before the residence was completed, Brigham passed away. It was finished by President John Taylor and named the Gardo House.

Amelia was reputedly the favorite wife of Brigham Young. She was tall, stately and queenly in appearance; and, for her, Young built the "Amelia Palace". She was distantly related to Mrs. Grover Cleveland.

She died, at the age of 72, on December 11, 1910 in Salt Lake City, Utah.[1][2] She is buried at the Salt Lake City Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.[3]
