Biography
John Constantine (J. C. or Jay C) Flippen Jr. was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 6 March 1898, the son of John Constantine Flippen and Emma L. Pack.
J. C. was an American character actor who often played police officers or weary criminals in many films of the 1940s and 1950s. He was an established and respected vaudeville singer and stage actor before his film career; attaining the most coveted booking in vaudeville, headlining at the Palace Theatre in New York. At one time he was also a radio announcer for New York Yankees games. He recorded more than 30 songs for Columbia, Perfect and Brunswick. He worked with James Stewart, John Wayne, Debbie Reynolds, Gregory Peck, Dick Van Dyke, James Arness and many others.
After a leg amputation in due to serious infection and likely complicated by diabetes in 1965, J. C. continued acting, usually using a wheelchair.
He was married for 25 years to screenwriter Ruth Brooks Flippen. He died February 3, 1971 during surgery for an aneurysm caused by a swollen artery. He was interred in a crypt in the Corridor of Memories section at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.
