Geoffrey Flewell-Smith was born on 31st October 1906 in Tarampa, Queensland, Australia. He was the fifth and youngest (third surviving) son of John Flewell-Smith and Frances Stephens. [1] Although he commenced schooling at Tarampa Primary School most of his primary education was at Sandgate State School, on Brisbane's northside following the family's move to Bracken Ridge in 1914. There, he became one of the original members of the Sandgate Boy Scout Troop.
Geoffrey married Mabel Parker on 4th November 1939 in the Wesley Methodist Church, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane. [2] The Telegraph announced the wedding with an illustrated article. [3]
Geoffrey was an officer in the militia (B Company 9/49th Battalion (Sandgate Company) and, upon the outbreak of the Second World War transferred to the Second Australian Imperial Force. [4] He was a re-inforcement in the 2/9th Australian Infantry Battalion, 18th Brigade. The 18th Brigade went from 6th Division initially, to the newly-formed 9th Division in Britain, to the 7th Division in the Middle East. The 2/9th saw action in North Africa, garrisoned Syria and fought at Milne Bay and at Buna, Papua. [5] He was discharged on 11th July 1943.
He passed away on 28th October 1979 in Brisbane, three days before the 73rd anniversary of his birth. [6]
