Allan enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1939, attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.[2]
He served as the National Librarian of Australia from 1970 to 1974.[3]
Allan died in Melbourne on 18 January 2001. He was 88.[4][5] His funeral was held on 19 January 2001 at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, Springvale.[6]
