Richard was born in 1914.[1] He was the son of Scottish-born George Norval Fleming[2] and his wife Ethel Sackville Reed.[3]
In 1930 Richard, his mother and sister, Margaret, disembarked from the Armadale Castle in Southampton, Hampshire. They were due to visit "Riddings" in Alfreton, Derbyshire, and had sailed in First Class.[4] In October 1935 Richard returned from Africa to England where he was a student at Magdalene College, Cambridge.[5]
Richard was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1946 New Year's Honours list. He was serving as a Major in The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment).[6]
