Biography

Kurt Flatow was born in Berlin on 30 July 1907. He was a son of Leo Flatow and his wife Margarete Flatow (born Guttmann).[1][2]

Kurt became a dentist.

He married twice, the first time in 1931 in Königs Wusterhausen.[1] On 27 October 1936, he remarried in Berlin. His second wife was the dentist Margot Translateur (born in Rybnik, Silesia). He was living at Friedensstraße 78, Berlin when he married Margot.[3]

In 1937 Margot gave birth to their son Alfred (later: Fred).[4]

According to an article published in Australia in 1967, the family left Berlin in 1938 and went to China.[4] In 1944, the family was living in Shanghai at 50/8 Zangyang Lu where Kurt was working as a dentist and his wife Margot a dental surgeon. They were classified as "German Refugees".[5] In the 1938 Shanghai emigrant address book they also show.[6]

However, there is an entry in the phone book for Kurt Flatow in Berlin in 1940 living at SW 68 Dresdener Str 40. His occupation was "Fuhrgesch". It follows they may have left Berlin later or there were possibly two "Kurt Flatow" living in Berlin.[7]

After the war, the Flatow family emigrated to Australia on the SS PRIAM which arrived in 1946. All three entered as "stateless".[4][8] Kurt's sister, Claire Spiegelglas, (originally "Kläre Flatlow") also migrated to Australia. She came with her husband Alexander Siegelglas and their daughter Irina in 1948.[9] See: Kläre (Flatow) Spiegelglass (1902-)

Kurt, Margot and Alfred settled in Sydney. In 1951/52 they were living in Concord.[10] By May 1953, they had moved to Belmore.[11]

In 1951/52, they took steps to become naturalised, advertising their intention in local newspapers as required at the time.

I, KURT FLATOW, of Ger-
man nationality, born at
Berlin, Germany, resident
five years in Australia, now
residing at 13 Salt St., Con-
cord, intend to apply for
Naturalisation under the
Nationality and Citizenship
Act. 1948[12]
I, MARGOT FLATOW, of
German Nationality, born at
Rybnik, Germany, resident six
years in Australia, now resid-
ing at 15 Chisholm Ave., Be-
more, intend to apply for Na-
turalisation under the National-
ity and Citizenship Act, 1948.[13]

Kurt was naturalised on 8 Aug 1952[10] and Margot on 15 May 1953. [11]

In Australia, both Kurt and his son Fred, were successful chess players.[4]

Kurt and his wife were probably the owners of "K. & M. Flatow Dental Laboratories Pty Ltd", a company they wound up voluntarily in 1981.

"In the matter of the Companies Act, 1961, and in the matter
of K. & M. FLATOW DENTAL LABORATORIES PTY LTD.
- Notice is hereby given that at an extraordinary general
meeting of the abovenamed company, duly convened and held
at 15 Chishold Avenue, Belmore, at 10 a. m. on Monday,
1st June, 1981, the following resolution was passed: "That
the company be wound up voluntarily and that Kurt Flatow
be appointed liquidator". - Dated this 5th day of June, 1981.
K. M. FLATOW, Liquidator, c.o. R. A. BIRREL & ASSOCIATES,
15 A Belmore Street. Burwood 2134."[14]

His wife died in August 1991. He passed away 15 months later on 26 November 1992. His funeral was held on 3rd December at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium. There is a memorial plaque for both Kurt and Margot at Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium, in Macquarie Park, New South Wales.[15][16][17]
