Biography

Duane was born in 1933. He was the son of Vernon Flake and Georgia Gardner. He passed away in 2004.

Duane Wendell Flake 1933 ~ 2004 Wendell returned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, March 24, 2004. Our hearts are grateful for the loving husband and father he was and for the unique life he shared.

Born April 15, 1933 in Snowflake, Arizona to Vernon S. and Georgia Mae Gardner Flake. At the age of 1 his mother died, but another wonderful mother, Dixie, came and filled his life with joy. He married his sweetheart, Vonda L. Butterfield on April 2, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Wendell served in the Korean War; was a police officer for Salt Lake City, a building contractor, miner and entrepreneur. Wendell enjoyed music and played the trumpet, violin, piano and organ. He was an avid BYU fan, loved racquetball and basketball, but his happiest moments were spent with family and friends. He loved people, and his positive attitude with his ability to find the good and beauty in all things was his gift to us all.

Survived by his caring wife Vonda Butterfield of Midvale; his children, Kerry and ChiKay Cole of Sandy; Wendi Munsen of Salt Lake; Bryce and Michelle Flake of Alpine; mother Dorothy Turley of Arizona; brother Darrell (Floretta) Flake of Tennessee; sister Doreen (Allen) Hendrickson of Orem; 18 grandchildren,nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, one son and a granddaughter.

His family wishes to extend their gratitude to the VA hospital and staff. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 29, 2004 at 12:00 noon, Midvalley Chapel, 1211 East 7800 South. Friends may call at the Cannon Mortuary, 2460 E. Bengal Blvd. (7600 S.) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. or 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the funeral services on Monday. Interment Herriman Cemetery, 11800 South 600 West, Herriman City, Utah.
