William Edward was born in Camberwell in 1858. His parents were James Flack and Elizabeth (Pronger) Flack.[1] The 1871 census cites William as twelve years old and living with his family in St Mary Newington.[2] This was a relatively new parish which embraced the local workhouse establishments. Newington had a workhouse since 1734, for almost a century in sub-standard condition for children and adults alike, with notorious work, living and health conditions. Substantial redevelopment and improvements began in 1814, and continued for many years.[3] His wife's parents and siblings were also associated with the same Parish's Workhouse network.

William married Sarah (Phillips) Flack in 23 May 1880 at Emmanuel, Lambeth, England.[4][5][6][7]

The 1881 census recorded William as living at 116, Farmers Road (Camberwell), and employed as a Carman [Taxi Driver]. He is living in Newington, London with his eighteen year old wife and their new-born daughter Jessie (Flack) Lamfard.[8] They have a fifty year old lodger Emma (Unknown) Jackson, a Shoe Binder Mkr [Maker] from Newington, Surrey.

The 1891 census shows William has a full household, including his sixty-three year old mother Elizabeth (Pronger) Flack, recorded as widowed.[9] William's father, James Flack, died in 1885.[10]

In 1901, William was employed as a Commercial Traveller, age forty-two.[11][12]

William and his family were living in the Parish of Lambeth in 1911. He was employed as a 'Traveller: ETC,' and fifty-two years old.[13]

In 1912, William and Sarah (Phillips) Flack, and their children Sydney Flack, George Flack, Grace Flack and Gladys Flack, emigrated to the United States of America, arriving at Ellis Island, New York.[14] He is recorded as a Traveller by profession, age fifty-two, married and with a brother, Thom. William, in England at address 18--- Street, Kennsington Road, London. The family sailed onboard the SS St Louis from Southampton arriving on 6 June 1912, final destination Pennsylvania, Erie.[15] William E, Flack is recorded as 'William S. Flack in another source:[16]

The family are cited in the US Census of 1920.[17] Dates of birth are estimated and inaccurate, but the family are cited as from England and now living in Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. Their son Sydney Flack, married Mary Mathes on 30 January 1930 in Erie, Pennsylvania.[18]The census records William as emigrating in 1912.

William and his wife Sarah are further cited in the US marriage records of their children, Gladys Flack (10 Sept 1920, Erie, Pennsylvania), George Flack (19 Nov 1926, Erie, Pennsylvania) and Frederick Flack (14 Feb 1947, Los Angeles).

William Edward died and was buried in 1927, in Erie, Pennsylvania.[19]His date of birth is recorded as 20 June 1861.

Research Notes

  • William Edward should not be confused with William Flack, born in 1856 and married to Eliza (Kenealy) Flack.[20]
  • William's US DoB on his death and burial record is 1861.[21] For this profile the UK GRO recorded DoB is cited, as 1858.
  • The 1901 census for the same household is divided into two parts:[22][23]
  • Emigration date can vary between 1911-1912.
  • William E Flack is referrenced as 'William S Flack' in the Family Search New York Book Indexes to Passenger Lists, 1906-1942. His wife's and children's names appear correct and legible on the original passenger list record. An accurate and detailed passenger list is from:[24]
  • Southampton to Ellis Island, New York.[25]
  • The Family's emigration destination.[26]
