Biography

Historian David Crouch, in his ODNB biography for her husband, wrote:[1]

Earl Reginald's wife appears as ‘M’ in a charter to Launceston of her daughter Mathilda. It may be that the Gesta Stephani is correct in reporting her fall into insanity in the 1140s; this would account for her near invisibility in Reginald's later career.

Keats Rohan (Domesday Descendants p.948 seems to be citing another Launceston charter (nr. 257), by her brother Robert fitz William, where he names his sister as Countess Mabilia, and Earl Reginald is first witness. As the charter is for her soul, she was perhaps dead. The charter is dated to 1155-1162, because Richard Earl of Devon (de Reviers) is second witness.

I think the alternative name Beatrice should be removed? Also I think that if we are inventing our own patronymics, then the LNAB is wrong. A girl could not be a "fitz" if the name is a really patronymic. I am not sure what other family name to give her though. There is an ODNB article which calls the family the "Cardinan family". That is the LNAB we are currently giving her male line ancestor.

I feel confident that the letter "i" has been omitted from the family name.

Richardson in Royal Ancestry distinguishes the wife MABEL fitz William (whose father was a fitz Richard) and a mistress apparently named Beatrice.

It seems we should consider changing both the first and second name here.

BTW here is the latest MEDLANDS text which also mentions doubts about the first name: http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLISH%20NOBILITY%20MEDIEVAL1.htm#RenaudDunstanvilledied1175

Maybe she is properly fitz William, not Richard, but doesn't fitz mean "son of"?

The spelling of Beatrice's maiden name seems to be lacking the letter "i" in Fitz.

De Mortaigne-16 and Fitzrichard-19 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same father, I believe, same time frame, same location, Cornwall

Beatrice isn't Mabel. Mabel was a wife. Beatrice is a mistress who later married William Briware (de Briware, Brewer, Bruer) - first Baron of Dugdale.

Beatrice's maiden name was de Vaux or de Valle. There were children.
