William Robert FitzSimons was born on 26th November 1870 at Greencastle, near Moville, County Donegal, Ireland. He was the son of Samuel FitzSimons and Isabella Gamble. [1]
After his father's death, William accompanied his mother and nine siblings to New South Wales (Australia), arriving in late 1889. One brother, Charles, remained in Ireland. [1]
William married Bessie Love in 1898 at St Leonards, New South Wales. [2] They had a son and a daughter:
About 1901, William qualified as a dentist and practised in Macquarie Street, Sydney. [3]
From 1910 to 1922, William served on the Kuring-gai Shire Council and was its president in 1917-21. As a Nationalist, he won the seat of Cumberland in 1922, sitting in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly until 1925. Although an infrequent and unimpressive speaker in the House, he was extremely popular and assiduous in his electorate. [3]
He passed away on 20th March 1926 at Sydney Hospital, Macquarie Street, from injuries received when knocked down by a car while disembarking a tram in Hunter Street. He was buried in the Presbyterian section of Northern Suburbs Cemetery.
