Eudo, also called Yvo/Ivo, was an illegitimate son of King John.[1][2] His birth date and place are not known, nor is the name of his mother.
On 21 April 1233 Eudo was granted lands at Aldbury, Hertfordshire during the minority of the heir of William d'Avranches. He is described in this as "king's son".[1][2][3]
On 22 April 1237, Eudo, referred to as the king's brother, was awarded an annuity of £20 from the royal Exchequer until "the king benefice him otherwise in wards or escheats".[4]
On 10 July 1238 the Constable of Colchester, Essex was instructed to allow Eudo (described as brother of Henry III) ten oaks from the forest of Kingswood.[5]
1240 Eudo joined his half-brother Richard, Earl ofCornwall on crusade. He died in the Holy Land.[1]
Close and Patent Rolls records of 21 January 1241/2 refers to Eudo's executors and his will, and indicates that he was dead by then. It describes him as Henry III's brother. Another record of 28 January 1241/2 relating to his estate gives his name as Ivo. His lands in Essex were granted to Giles de Cancels (Egidius de Cancell').[6][7] No record has been found of any children.
Alison Weir's list of King John's illegitimate children in Britain's Royal Families raises the possibility that Eudo and Ivo might have been separate people.[8] This is likely to be based on a misinterpretation of 1242 records cited above, in which he is named both Eudo and Ivo.
