Eric James Fisher was born in 5th June 1915 in Ardlethan, a small service town between Temora and Griffith (east-west) and West Wyalong and Narrandera (north-south), New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of James Fisher and Mary H unknown. [1] Ardlethan lays claim to be the birthplace of the Australian Kelpie.
On 8th July 1940 at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Eric enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force. His next-of-kin was listed as Keith Fisher. [2] Allocated to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion, he served in the Libyan Campaign (January-March 1941) and Greece-Crete Campaign (March-May 1941), before garrison duties in Syria (August 1941-January 1942) and Ceylon (March-July 1942). After returning to Australia with the battalion, and a very brief leave, he was appointed commander of the Medium Machine Gun Platoon for the Kokoda Campaign in September 1942, having been commissioned as a Lieutenant. He was discharged on 7th September 1944. [2] Following the war he was awarded the campaign and service medals: 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
Eric married Dorothy Ewart in 1943 in Wagga Wagga. [3]
