Biografi

Parents and family

Ingebjørg Finnsdotter was the daughter of Finn Arnesson, [1][2] and his wife, Bergliot Halfdansdottir. Her father, Finn Arnesson, was the Lendmann of Harald Hardråde Sigurdsson, King of Norway, and her mother, Bergliot Halfdansdottir, was his niece. Her mother's sister, Sigrid Finnsdatter, married jarl Orm Eilivsson, grandson of jarl Haakon (Håkon) Sigurdsson.

Before 1035, she married 1st, Thorfinn, Earl of the Orkney Islands. [2]

During their marriage, her husband, Thorfinn, saved her life, when "Rögnvald (possibly Ragnvald Brusesson, son of his brother, Brúsi Sigurdsson)...surprising Thorfinn in a house on the Mainland of Orkney,...set fire to it. Thorfinn broke down part of the wall of the house and leapt out, carrying his wife, Ingebjørg, in his arms, and escaped through the smoke.” [3]

  2. Paul (Pål) Thorfinnsson, Jarl of Orkney, b. abt 1049, Orkney Islands, Orkney, Scotland; d. 1103, Bergen, Hordaland, Norway

After Thorfinn had died (around 1065), Ingebjørg married 2nd, the Gaelic king of Alba (present-day Scotland), Máel Coluim mac Donnchada, best known as Malcolm III, King of Scots. [1][4][5]

Death

Ingebjørg Finnsdotter died "17 Feb., year unknown." [1]

Research Notes

  1. According to MedLands, there should be considerable doubt about whether she married Malcolm III, and was the mother of any of his sons, at all. [15]

The name you have for her is incorrect a it includes the byname, "Jarlemoder", that she was given, by a friend/enemy (probably friend in this case).

It would definately not be her name at birth as Jarlemoder means mother of the Earls so would only have been relevant after her 2 sons Erland and Paul became Jarls, on the death of their father in 1064.

I found this weblink very useful to help understand the old Norse naming conventions http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ONNames.shtml

By exploring that sight further I might also suggest that her name is spelt with an "i" i.e. Ingiborg (this is the spelling used in The Orkneyinga Saga and by the foundation for medieval genealogy). However I'm not aware of any naming rules on Wikitree as to how to name a person if their name changes depending on which 'language' you use i.e. names are different in Old Norse, Icelandic, modern etc,etc
