John Fillingham was christened on 28 Aug 1840 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Anthony and Esther Fillingham. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Burrows Lane, Eccleston. John's father was a collier, John was 10 months old.

By March 30th 1851, they were in Windle; John's father was a coal miner.

John's father died in 1851, and was buried on 5 Nov 1851 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 41, and his address as Windle.

John's son Henry Laven or Fillingham was born out of wedlock in about January 1861. He was presumably the son of Mary Lavarn or Lavam, who was lodging with John Fillingham's family in 1861.

By April 7th 1861, the family was living at 375 Eccleston Street, Eccleston. John was a coal miner. Henry is listed in the census as the son of John's mother Esther, but in 1871 he was described as her grandson, and when he married he named John Fillingham (collier) as his father.

John died in 1862, and was buried on 9 Nov 1862 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 22, and his address as Eccleston.
