Biography

Bronisława was born on 17 September 1875 and baptized two days later in Ołpiny, Galicia, Austria, to Paweł Figura and Wictoria Gogola. The family (Paweł, Wictoria, along with Bronisława (4) and Daniel (11 moinths)) sailed from Bremen to Baltimore in June of 1880 and settled in the near north Polish neighborhood of Stanisławowo in Chicago.

In 1891, Bronisława married Franciszek Bobula on 28 July. By 1900, the family was renting in a building on Augusta Street with six other families, Frank working as a day laborer to support his family of Bronisława, Stanisław, Władysław, and Paweł as well as his 19-year-old sister, Salomea, who worked as a tobacco packer. Franciszek and Bronisława could both read and write and spoke English.

Mary, Thomas, Edward, John, and Helen were added to the family by 1910, but Michael, born 29 September 1910, died four days later. The family lived at 2152 53rd Ave. in Chicago, and Frank owned his own grocery store to support the family. But in June of 1911, Frank passed away, leaving his wife, now called Bernice, a widow with eight children.

With the support of her children, Bernice eventually moved to a brick bungalow at 3500 LaVergne in Chicago by 1930; her divorced son, Paul, two single sons, Thomas and Edward, and daughter Helen all worked at the start of the depression. In 1940, only her daughter, Helen, and her husband, George Grabowski, along with a 52 year old lodger, Eleanor Ryan, lived with Bernice.

When she died in 1948 at age 74, her Chicago Tribune obituary read

Bernice Bobula, nee Figura, fond mother of Stanley, Walter, Paul, Mary, Thomas, Edward, John and Helen Grabowski, sister of Vincent, grandmother of twenty-three grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Funeral Thursday, Sept. 23, at 9:30 a.m., from chapel, 5247-53 W. Fullerton avenue. To St. Ladislaus's church. Interment St. Adalbert's.
