Ottobuono was a member of the Fieschi family of Liguria who were counts of Lavagna.[1]
In 1243 he was appointed papal chaplain. In December 1251 he was created Cardinal Deacon of San Adriano.[1]
Pope Clement IV sent him to England in 1265 to mediate between King Henry III and his barons. His sister Beatrice Fieschi married Thomas II of Savoy, cousin of Henry III's wife, Eleanor of Provence.[2] He was the papal legate to England between October 1265 and July 1268.
He was elected Pope on 11 July 1276. He died at Viterbo on 18 August 1276 from illness. He was never ordained to the priesthood. He was buried in the church of San Francesco alla Rocca.[1][3]
