Upon her death, in 1968 Edna Ferber was hailed as the greatest American woman novelist of her day. As a girl, she dreamed of becoming an actress, but finances preventing her from attended college. Instead, a teenage Ferber became the first female reporter for the local newspaper in Appleton Wisconsin. She continued as a journalist with the Milwaukee journal until about anemia, sent her home to convalesce. She began writing fiction during her recovery and later moved to New York to pursue her writing career. She was a prodigious writer, authoring a dozen novels, numerous short stories, and Novella, as well as plays musicals and screenplay. Her fourth publishing novel, so big, was awarded the 1924 pets prize cementing her status in the literary world. Her next novel show boat would be adapted into a groundbreaking musical play, allowing for her to explore her first love of the theater.

Ferber died at her home in New York City, of stomach cancer, at the age of 82. She left her estate to her sister and nieces. [1]
Edna was mentioned on a memorial with a death date of 16 April 1968.[2]
