Biography

Sarah was a Friend (Quaker)

Birth and Parentage

Sarah Fell was born in 1642, the daughter of Thomas Fell and Margaret Askew.[1] Until her marriage, she spent much of her life at her parents' home, Swarthmoor Hall, Lancashire.[2]

Quakerism

She joined the Quaker movement with her mother and sisters in 1652.[3] In 1663 she, her mother, her sister Mary and others visited Quaker meetings, travelling to much of England.[4]

She was present at Lancaster assizes, Lancashire when her mother and George Fox were tried and sent to prison in 1664 for their Quaker ways.[5] Subsequently she went to London to join her sister [[Fell-1383|Margaret}] and brother-in-law John Rous in pleading for her mother.[6]

Household Accounts

For many years Sarah managed the accounts, and much of the business, of Swarthmoor Hall.[7] and her account book survives. It is one of the most systematic and substantial sets of private accounts to have survived from the period.[8]

Marriage

Sarah married William Meade on 28 June 1681 at Devonshire House without Bishopsgate, London. He was described as a citizen and merchant tailor of London in the Quaker marriage record.[9] They had a son, Nathaniel Meade. [10]. He died without issue.

Death

Sarah died on 9 June 1714 and was buried on 14 June 1714 at Barking, Essex.[11]

  • History of the Manuscript owned by Margaret Fell Fox and her daughter, Sarah Fell Meade. Originally published in 1920, this book contains the annotated account book of Sarah Fell, the step-daughter of George Fox, the founder of Quakerism. Fell kept the family accounts in this book from 1673 to 1678, and the result is an interesting look into the economy of a gentleman's household immediately following the Restoration, as well as evidence of the role played by women in household management. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in daily life in the late seventeenth century.

I have expanded and edited the bio, drawing on Quaker records and Isabel Ross's biography of her mother.

WikiPedia has a lot on this Sarah Fell Meade who only married once and only had one son named Nathaniel and they never immigrated to Maryland.

This English profile was accidently merged a couple years ago to a Maryland profile of same names and different generation (actually more than 70 years apart!). Two MEAD/MEADE families were merged. I am reconstructing both profiles with the sources available.
